Introduction to knitting

knitting

Knitting is an old method of weaving cloth in which thread or yarn are used to make items of clothing like sweaters and shawls etc. To knit, one generally uses a knitting needle and forms a series of loops with some thread or yarn through which more yarn is pulled using another knitting needle. This process is repeated either in round formations or in rows. In modern times, there are also knitting machines available which can be used to create the same effects with less effort and in less time. There are two main kinds of knitting stitches called knit and purl which are very similar in many ways. However, while a knit stitch involves inserting the needle in front of the loop, a purl stitch involves inserting it behind the loop.

Other knitting stitches are usually variations of combinations of knits and purls. For instance, when knits and purls are used back and forth to form rows, this formation is called a garter stitch. The jersey stitch – which is another formation of rows of purls and knits – is the knitting stitch which is most often used in commercial garments. There are many patterns which can be thus created using different kinds of stitches.

There are two main schools-of-thought where knitting is concerned. One is the English knitting school-of-thought and the other is the Continental school-of-thought. Those who follow the English style, usually hold the yarn in their right hands whereas followers of the Continental style of knitting hold the yarn in their left hands.

knitting as a hobby

Knitting is an extremely popular hobby among people of various genders and various age groups. It is such a consuming past-time that it tends to take one’s mind off one’s worries and hence has therapeutic value as well. Often, people with stress-related illnesses are advised to take up knitting as it has been seen to alleviate stress. In addition to being a great hobby, knitting is also seen as an art-form and can be a great way to express oneself as well. Another reason to take up knitting is undoubtedly because of the financial aspect of it. If you take it seriously enough, knitting could end up earning you a good income as well.

One of the advantages of taking up knitting as a hobby is that it is extremely portable and can be carried along with you from place to place. Unlike other hobbies which may involve using heavy equipment like cooking for example, a knitting kit is light-weight and simple and hence can be packed up and moved easily. If you compare knitting to a hobby like coin-collecting or stamp-collecting, you will appreciate that it is neither as pain-staking nor as mentally consuming as these. While the hobby of knitting keeps one’s mind occupied, it does not need a lot of mental work or attention to do. In addition, you can knit wherever you are and one can even knit while commuting if one so chooses.

knitting and embroidery classes and suppliers

Knitting is an age-old art and method of turning out ready-to-wear garments. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that people prepared knit-wear in ancient times and the fact that the trend is still carried on shows that this is a time-tested style of creating garments that will always have a certain market. Aside from the fact there will always be a certain demand for knit-wear there have also always been enough people who take up this form of garment-weaving as a hobby. Whatever one’s reason may be, it is perhaps extremely advantageous that there are plenty of good courses available to teach this art to enthusiasts willing to learn it. In India, one can learn the ancient art of knitting at any of these centers and classes.

knitting machine

In ancient times, knitting may have been performed using just one knitting needle. Gradually the process of knitting evolved and weavers started using two needles to create knit-wear. Eventually, knitting enthusiasts developed pegs, knitting machines and various tools to facilitate the task of knitting. Although these tools were scoffed upon in initial stages by those who preferred the finish of hand-knitted garments, many people started turning to these tools eventually to take advantage of the ease of manufacturing. Knitting machines could be used to create beautiful knit-wear with less effort and more efficiency. More garments could be created in less time by using knitting machines and this led to the boom of this form of knitting. Of course not all knitting enthusiasts turned away from hand-knitting and there are still many people who prefer to create one hand-knitted garment at a time. However designers and garment manufacturers naturally prefer the time-saving, efficient knitting machines to the laborious process of hand-knitting.

The knitting machine is sometimes referred to as a knitting frame or knitting loom. This is used to weave fabrics into knit-wear using a fixed bed of hooked needles. There are many varieties of knitting machines available today which may be hand powered or motorized. Depending on the machine you have selected, patterns can be created by hand or at the press of a button. Some modern machines even employ dials, punch cards or electronic pattern reading devices to achieve different patterns. Knitting machines are available in either domestic or industrial models. They may have flat or circular beds that produce rectangular or tubular fabrics.

knitting needles

By definition, a knitting needle, which is also known as a knitting pin, is a long stick which is one of the crucial tools used in the process of manufacturing or stitching any kind of knitted fabric or knit-wear. Knitting, as we know it today, is achieved through the use of two knitting needles. However this was not always the case. In fact, certain discoveries have shown that knitting in ancient times may have been conducted using just one needle and short pieces of fibers or fabrics. Today, there are also many knitting machines which can be used to create beautiful pieces of knit-wear with more complicated patterns and in less time. However many people still prefer to knit the old-fashioned way. In fact, knitting is a fast-growing hobby which is not only relaxing but can also be quite lucrative.

Typically, knitting needles are used to reach through knitting stitches and form new loops, after which the entire process is repeated. To best serve their purpose, knitting needles should be smooth, and thin. They must be long enough to reach comfortably through a stitch and strong enough to keep from breaking in the middle of a stitch. Knitting needles are also known by other names like they may be referred to as knitting sticks, knitting pins or knitting wires. Occasionally knitting enthusiasts may refer to these as wires or rods. The length and thickness of the needles usually depends on both, the type of yarn being used and the type of fabric which is required to be produced.

knitting patterns

The fact that knitting is an ancient weaving technique is evident in the antique knits that have been discovered by archeologists and which have been estimated to date back to as early as 256 AD. These hand-knitted garments were discovered in the archeological site of the old Syrian city of Dura Europas. In some other ancient knits that were discovered and researched in the late twentieth century, the technique used seems to have involved using just one needle – rather than two needles as were used in the Syrian knits mentioned earlier – and short pieces of materials.

Hence knitting styles are generally believed to have evolved from one-needle to two-needle styles and thereafter to knitting with the means of peg frames, knitting frames, circular-sock machines and other home knitting machines. Naturally, with this evolution of technology, there has also been a change in the kinds of knitting patterns that can now be created. Each era therefore saw different knitting patterns gaining prominence. In ancient times for instance, religion and mythology featured as popular themes in knitted garments. Evidence of this can even be seen in ancient works of art wherein subjects have been depicted wearing such knitted garments.

Knitted stockings became a popular trend in the sixteenth century. Many such stocking were knitted out of silk threads, especially for members of Royal families. Gloves were also popular knit-wear in that era and had special value for religiously inclined people.

It was around the later eighteenth century that people started experimenting with different kinds of knitting frames and it was only in this era that dual-colored patterns become fashionable.

knitting yarn

There are two basic requirements to start on a knitting project. One would basically need knitting yarns and knitting needles. Of course there are machines, pegs and various other tools that are available to knitting enthusiasts as well but one can get started on a basic project without any of these additional items as well. To achieve a good quality of knit, one must first ensure that one has chosen the right yarn, needle and pattern. These must be selected according to which items would work best together. While some projects may not require a lot of co-ordination, others would need to be carefully considered and planned-out right from the start. For example, for knitting projects like scarves or blankets, it does not make much difference what kind of yarn one decides to use. On the other hand, for other knit-wear projects like sweaters, one must first decide upon a pattern before selecting the yarn and needles for the project. Once the pattern is selected, beginners especially must adhere to the yarn recommended in the pattern or at least opt for some yarn that comes close to it. Failure to adhere to these recommendations could spoil your creation and may not leave you with the desired end-result.

Therefore, if you have your heart set on a specific yarn, it would make sense to try to find a pattern that is suitable for that particular variety of yarn. Alternately, you could also choose a pattern that is recommended for another yarn that works up to the same gauge as the yarn of your choice. That may work just as well.
